What is Renewable Natural Gas?

Renewable Natural Gas (biomethane) is a fossil-free, ultra-clean & ultra-low carbon natural gas alternative that is derived from biogas. As organic waste breaks down, it emits naturally occurring biogas — predominantly methane — that can be conditioned to RNG as a drop-in direct substitute for traditional natural gas. ❌ RNG is synonymous with biogas

✅ RNG is biogas-derived, high-BTU gas that is predominately methane after biogas is upgraded to remove most of the contaminants & a majority of the carbon dioxide (CO2) & nitrogen (N2) found in biogas.

❌ RNG is a fossil fuel

✅ RNG is produced from renewable waste streams (agricultural/food waste, landfills & wastewater treatment plants). Natural Gas comes from limited fossil, geologic, or natural resource.

❌ RNG use is dirty for our climate

✅ RNG is the cleanest of the alternative fuels. RNG produces net carbon-neutral and even net carbon-negative results when fueling on-road vehicles. RNG motor fuel use has eliminated 7,251,351 metric tons of CO2e over the last five years.
