Project Development
Each project brings a number of temporary and permanent jobs, increases regional tax revenue and increases investment capital. The RNG industry has grown rapidly in a short period of time, with significant further growth anticipated in the near future. At the end of 2015, there were 48 projects; in less than four years the number of facilities more than doubled and now exceeds 100.
Increased Employment
The development of a new RNG facility creates significant employment, requiring design and engineering services, 20 to 40 local trade positions during construction, and up to 5 or more permanent employees for on-site operations. A study by ICF estimated that RNG production facilities generate approximately 550 additional jobs per 100 million EGE. Employment is promoted more broadly through ongoing operating and maintenance expenditures. 70,000 new clean energy jobs would be created if every potential RNG project was developed in the United States.
Increased Business Investment
Total capital costs for smaller landfill gas-to-RNG projects are in the range of $5 million to $25 million, and they can be upwards of $100 million for RNG projects from larger landfills or agricultural waste sources. Based on information provided by RNG industry companies, the industry trade association (RNG Coalition) estimates that the average RNG project requires $17 million of capital investment.
Increase Tax Revenue
The revenues from each new RNG project results in significant increases to local and state tax income. The revenue contributes back into regional areas to help fund schools, area infrastructure, and more to benefit the local community!
